How To Tell If A Home AC Compressor Is Bad

How To Tell If A Home AC Compressor Is Bad

If your air conditioner compressor not working your home isn’t going to get the cold air it needs to stay comfortable.  This guide will help you know how to tell if a home AC compressor is bad.  The AC compressor’s job is to compress your unit’s refrigerant gas which is coming from the low pressure end in the home into the high pressure needed to enter the condenser.  This process turns the refrigerant from a gas into a liquid.  Malfunctioning AC Compressors will mean higher electricity bills along with under performing coolness in the air coming into your home.  Schedule home ac repair by calling 602-488-7161.

    Bad AC Compressor Signs

There are various methods to detect if your home AC issues are being caused by a bad AC compressor.  Don’t put off getting your AC compressor or HVAC system repair as it is likely costing you more to run and leaving something half damaged could lead to more expensive repairs.

Sign 1 – No hot air coming out of the AC unit outdoors

While the air in your home is meant to be cool the process to make that cool air creates heat.  As the system runs and the AC compressor does its job it is exhausted from the unit via the fan.  Feel the air coming out of the AC unit and if it is cool or lukewarm, your ac compressor might be the problem.

Sign 2 – Higher than normal electricity bill

If you’ve been using the AC system about the same but start to get higher than normal electricity bills, it could be the AC compressor.  When the compressor cannot compress the gas sufficiently the ac unit will run more often and cost more electricity to run.

Sign 3 – Abnormal sounds when working

If you hear unusual sounds while your ac system is working, it could be the compressor.  Generally, you’ll hear a system working smoothly outdoors but if you hear knocking, hissing, or it takes too long for the system to start working it could point to a worn our bad compressor.

Sign 4 – Leaks around the AC system

If you see moisture or puddles anywhere around your HVAC system, it could be a sign of leaking refrigerant.  In addition to being a sign you need home ac repair the refrigerant can cause health problems.  Health issues caused by leaked refrigerant include headache, irritated eyes, coughing, nausea, and more.  In addition to being a health hazard if left to fester the system will run out completely and no longer work.

Sign 5 – Home isn’t getting cold air

One of the first and most obvious signs a lot of homeowners notice is the air coming out of their vents is no longer cool.  Depending on what’s wrong with a compressor the system may still have airflow, it just will not be cool.  Give us a call to inspect your system if this is the case.

Sign 6 – Reduced flow of air

While it is probably the first sign that could be noticed, reduced airflow is hard to notice as most of us don’t sit inches away from the vents all day.  When an AC compressor is going bad you will have less cold air being generated and therefore less cold air coming out of the vents.

It was really informative when you said that if the AC unit is consuming more energy despite being no changes in the use, then that is a sign that the compressor is failing and the system is struggling. I will mention this to my husband since he is the one that noticed the increase in the electricity bills. He should be the one to call the AC repairman since I really don’t get the compressor either, and I do not want to tinker with it.

It got me when you said that it is actually a sign that something is wrong with the unit if the air that comes from the exhaust fan is not hot. If that is the case, then there really is something wrong with the AC. At first, the cool air started vanishing, and now the exhaust is not hot. Hopefully, it is not too late to get the system of the AC checked.

Thanks for explaining how strange noises on your air conditioning unit can be a sign of a worn out compressor. Our unit does this weird, funny wind up and clanging sound when we turn it on. It certainly looks like we’ll have to reach out to professional technicians to have a look at our AC compressor.

Thanks for pointing out that we probably need AC compressor repair if we’ve noticed reduced airflow coming from our home’s vents. Lately my home hasn’t been feeling as cool as it should, and when I held my hand in front of a vent the flow felt pretty weak. I’ll take your advice and have the compressor looked at soon!

I have been noticed that our A/C unit is making weird noises. As you mentioned, that could be a warning sign to call a professional and fix it. I will contact an A/C contractor to examine my A/C unit and prevent future problems with it.
