Types of Cases

First, you have to identify the type of case you need. Here the some common ones:

  • Meat and seafood cases. These cases are intended to hold fresh meat, poultry and seafood at their ideal storage temperature without causing them to freeze. They have frost inhibitors to prevent the glass from frosting. Cases for seafood also have trays to catch water run-off. 
  • Deli cases. These cases have multiple shelves on which to display their products, and they hold around 40ºF. They also retain moisture, which helps the product inside stay fresh. 
  • Bakery cases. These cases are similar to deli cases, but they tend to have less moisture. Diners usually use rotating bakery cases to display baked goods and desserts. 
  • Open display cases. These cases are used for products such as dairy items, vegetables and impulse purchases. They’re usually found in produce departments or near registers. 


One of the most important things to consider is the temperature of your display case. Refrigerated, non-refrigerated and dual-temperature cases are the three main types of curved display cases. If you want your products to stay fresh and chilled, you’ll need a refrigerated case. Refrigerated cases come in two different types: forced-air and gravity coil. Forced-air cases need fans to circulate the air, which may dry out products. Meanwhile, gravity coil cases use a chilled coil at the top, then let gravity do the work of dropping the air down and over the items. As such, they’re best used for raw meats and seafood. 

Additionally, for products such as bagels and bread, non-refrigerated cases are a great choice. Dual-temperature cases, on the other hand, have the ability to store both refrigerated and non-refrigerated items at the same time. This type of case is ideal for bakery establishments. 


The appearance of your commercial refrigeration display case also plays a major role in the success of your sales. White back panels are easier to keep clean, while black helps emphasize your colorful products. You should also make sure to have proper shelving for your items, as well as implement rotation guidelines for quality control. 

For glass cases, you can choose between straight and curved, depending on the look you’re going for. No matter which style you choose, be sure to clean the glass interior and exterior regularly.
