How to Get the Most From Your Ductless Mini-Split System in the Winter

Dec 16, 2021 | HVAC

With a ductless mini-split system, you can make home heating during the cold winter months more efficient. Getting the most out of your system, however, requires taking a few essential steps. A trusted HVAC and refrigeration maintenance contractor shares some of them here.

Ductless Mini-Split in Winter

  • Have a backup heat source. Mini-split systems are ideal for locations like Arizona that don’t normally experience severe winters. While a ductless mini-split system is a great option to supply heat throughout your living space during cool weather, it’s always best to have a backup heat source in case things go south. This can reduce stress on your mini-split system and help it function at an optimal level.

  • Protect the unit. Even if you don’t live in an area that sees a great deal of snow and ice, you need to make sure that your compressor unit is shielded from the elements. Either put a roof over it or mount it at least two feet above the ground.

  • Keep the air filter clean. Keeping the air filter clean is essential for good indoor air quality. The filters in ductless mini-split systems are smaller than those in conventional heating and air conditioning systems, meaning they get filled with dust and debris much more quickly. The good thing is that mini-split systems use filters that you can remove, clean and reuse. Experts recommend cleaning mini-split air filters every two weeks.

  • Know how to set the temperature. On a mini-split system, the thermostat sensors aren’t located in the same place as on a traditional thermostat. Instead, they’re located near the ceiling where the air is warmer. With sensors placed near the ceiling, you want to set the temperature higher, around 71 or 72 degrees, to achieve the comfort level you desire.
