4 Things You Need to Know About Using Your Heat Pump in Cold Weather

Nov 18, 2021 | HVAC

A heat pump is a great alternative to a furnace and air conditioner. In fact, it’s a cost-effective option, especially when compared to other electric heating methods that create heat. It works by moving heat from the outdoors into your house to warm you up when the weather is cold. In the summer season, it works in reverse by transferring heat from inside your house to the outdoors.

Even with all these benefits, you may still have doubts about this particular HVAC system, especially at this time of the year. Here A/C and Refrigeration, your trusted residential and commercial refrigeration contractor, shares four things you should know about using a heat pump in cold weather.

It always pulls heat out of the air. Unless the outdoor air reaches below freezing temperatures (below 32 degrees Fahrenheit), the heat pump can still pull heat out of it and transfer it indoors to keep you and your family warm.

It occasionally goes into defrost mode. You might be surprised when the heat pump switches to defrost mode all of a sudden. Fortunately, this is completely normal and only lasts for a short while. When ice starts to form inside the outdoor unit due to below-freezing outdoor temperatures, the heat pump will reverse operation to defrost its internal components. You must, however, get in touch with your HVAC and indoor air quality specialist if the defrost mode starts too frequently or lasts longer than normal.

Pair your heat pump with the right thermostat. When you invest in a heat pump for your house, make sure to ask the installer about a programmable thermostat to pair it with. This way, you don’t have to worry about constantly checking and adjusting it when it’s too cold during the winter or too warm during the summer.

Schedule regular tune-ups. Your heat pump must be regularly inspected and maintained to ensure peak performance year-round. A reliable HVAC contractor can check its working parts and pinpoint any issues that could compromise the unit’s efficiency.
